Start with a black liner, and draw a small shape in the center of your page – this should be a tall semicircle, which is bisected by a curved line just over halfway across, dividing the shape into two sections. Then, add a smaller circle within this second section.

Create a duplicate of this shape to the left of the original, and add another, longer semicircle between the two shapes, again, with the corners pointing down.

Move to the bottom of the trunk (the bottom of the “E”, and draw a line parallel to the first, giving you the outline of the trunk.

Now add some detail by drawing small lines from the right hand line of the trunk, into the middle. Repeat this all along the length of the trunk.

Head to the bottom right hand corner of the trunk, and add a semicircle shape which joins up with the bottom of the trunk. Inside this, add a shape which is almost a curved “M”, with a short vertical line just above this – this is the cheeky smile of your elephant!

On the other side of the bow, draw another curved line, which dips in and then back out, ending just above the bottom of the smile. Then, add three lines, in a “spray” from the middle of the bow.

Now, add a long “J” shape descending from the bottom corner of the face. At the top of the “J”, draw a curved line across to the left, and a short, vertical line heading down from the left hand corner of this. Add three small “bumps” from the top – these are the toes of your elephant.

Next, draw a semicircle in the center, dipping down below the face. On the other side of this, add a “C” shape at a slight angle, to make the other leg. Then, add a small, diagonal line just to the right of center, to show your elephant elbow.

Return to the top, and add a long, thin point just below the bow, extending out to the right – this will be the top of the ear…

Finish off the ear by drawing a curved shape out and down – this should almost resemble half of a butterfly in shape. End this roughly level with the toes.

Then, using the same pink pen, go in a little harder along the top line, and around the short, horizontal lines you drew earlier – you will form almost a curved, sideways “M” shape along the inside of the ears. You can also add a pink shade to the “m” of the tongue.

Interesting Facts About Elephants

When it comes to elephants, there are plenty of things to enjoy and be fascinated by! As the largest land animals, it goes without saying that these majestic creatures have an incredible presence, and their wonder does not stop at their amazing size!

One of the most impressive features of elephants comes from their incredible trunks – and these are perhaps one of their most distinctive features. With around 150,000 muscles in the trunk alone, these are incredible sensitive organs, and are used by elephants for everything from sucking up water to drink – the trunk can hold around 8 liters of water at a time – to snorkeling while swimming, as well as picking up food and exploring the world around them.

In addition to stunning trunks, elephants also possess another distinctive feature: the long, ivory tusks which sadly make them so appealing to poachers. These tusks are actually enlarged incisor teeth, and are used to help with feeding – they are super useful for digging up roots or pulling bark from trees to enjoy. Elephants will develop these teeth – or tusks – when they are around 2 years old, and they continue to grow for the entire life of the animal. This means that you can have a good guess as to the age of an elephant by taking a look at its tusks – the longer they are, the older the animal is likely to be.
