How to Draw a Cartoon Microphone

As any aspiring pop star knows, a good microphone is an essential element to success – nobody will take you seriously with a hairbrush in hand.

As well as helping to advance your pop career, however, microphones are also miracles of engineering; they work by converting mechanical energy waves, or the sound received, into electrical energy waves to amplify your voice, and allow you to really belt out that tune – all thanks to the power of science!

Step-By-Step Instructions

1.

How to draw a cartoon microphone step 1

Start with a straight, diagonal line, which begins in the bottom left hand corner, and extends through a 45 degree angle, to stop around an inch and a half (3.8 cm9 from the top of the page. Use a black pen and a ruler to draw this line.

Now repeat this using a ruler, with an identical line placed slightly underneath the first. The lines should move slightly apart as they reach the top of the page, creating almost a diagonal tunnel.

Join the bottom and the top of the lines together with a curved, horizontal line. Follow this with a parallel line just below the top, and an identical curve about a thumb-width below this.

Add a large semicircle to the top of your drawing, attaching to the top curve.

5.

Connect the two halves of the semicircle together with a smooth curve, and draw another just above, connecting these two semicircles with straight lines to form a “lip.”

Now, add another semicircle – this time the top half of a circle – to the “lip,” so that you have the outline of a microphone shape before you.

7.

Add hatching to the top of the microphone with a pencil by adding smooth, curved lines, heading downwards across the surface. These should get slightly longer as you get closer to the handle of the microphone.

Next, create cross-hatching with a pencil by repeating the previous step, drawing lines in the opposite direction across the top of the microphone. Follow up with some cross-hatching to the space below the lip, and above the handle. Make your lines long and sweeping to add texture. The end result should look almost like a “grid” across the top and bottom.

9.

Now for some color! Carefully fill in alternate squares of the grid with a solid, bold black color, so that you have a speckles appearance across the top of the microphone. Use a black pen for this.

Then, get an eraser and erase all the pencil marks from the microphone head.
