How to Draw a Cartoon Store

From providing our everyday essentials to playing a key role in any town or village, stores are a key feature in any landscape. From the stalls and carts of ancient traders, to the multi-level superplexes so often seen in big cities, the way we buy and sell the things we need has changed over the last few hundred years. At heart, however, our transactions remain the same, and the value and importance of the store has not diminished.

Whether you are creating the ultimate town, or just looking to design your dream selection, we have the ultimate guide to drawing a store – let’s get started!

Step-By-Step Instructions

1.

How to draw a cartoon store step 1

Get a blank sheet of paper and a black pen, then begin your drawing with three straight, horizontal lines, the first around an inch (1.3 cm) from the top of the page, and roughly in the center. The top two should be close together and the same length, while the third is a little lower and slightly shorter. Use a ruler to make your drawing easier.

2.

Join the top two lines with a short vertical line, and then join the bottom line to the second. You will now have a long, thin “strip”, with a “box” underneath.

Move to the bottom corners of the box, and draw a straight line from each, heading downwards at a 45 degree angle.

4.

Join these two lines with a “frill”, made of a series of “u” shapes connected together, and heading straight across to connect the two sides.

At each point of the “frill” (the spots at the top of each “u”), draw a straight line upwards to meet the bottom of the “box”.

6.

Next, move to approximately two frills in on each side, and draw a straight, horizontal line downwards on each side. On the left hand line, draw a long, horizontal line, leaving short tail on the left hand side of the line, and extending the line out on the right hand side. On the right hand line, draw a shorter horizontal line, again, with a “tail” on the outside edge. You will now have two horizontal lines at the bottom of your page, with a small gap preventing them from joining up. We will refer to this later as the “upper line.”

7.

In this gap, draw two parallel, vertical lines using a ruler, heading up to the bottom of the “frill”, and downwards to the bottom of the page, beneath the “upper line.” Connect these two lines with a horizontal join, to make a rectangle. Next, extend the line at the bottom of your rectangle, so that it is the same length as the “upper line.” This is now the “lower line.”

8.

Connect this bottom line to the “upper line” using two horizontal marks. Next, add two smaller rectangles inside the large rectangle.

Now for a window; draw two rectangles, one inside the other, just beneath the upper “frill”, and to the left of the three rectangles you have just created. These should take up most of the space in the shape.

How will customers be able to access you? Add a jaunty “Open” sign to the upper portion of the door – you are almost open for business!

Now time for some detail. Use a pen to fill in the lower portion of the shape, and the strip along the top, and then add hatching to the doorway and windows – make sure it is large and prominent in the windows. Use a darker shade for this.

Then, use a pencil to fill in the gaps in the doors and window with a lighter shade, adding depth and character.

Time to decorate the awning with alternate red and white shades across the top – make sure it looks cheerful and welcoming!

Now fill in the lower part of the roof, and the main walls with a bright yellow…
