Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
Start by taking a black fineliner pen, and drawing a small circle at the top of your page. Add a small, curved line to the top of this.
Then, add a larger circular shape around this, with a slight point to the left.
Repeat this shape slightly to the left of the first…
And then draw a curved line below this. At the top of this curved line, add another, slightly shorter curve.
Add a small “c” shape, angled to around 45 degrees, to the left end of the curved line, and then add another reverse “c” to the right of this.
Add two small, circular shapes inside each of these “c” shapes to create nostrils…
And then add a vertical curved line in the center of these.
Bring a curved line down from the left nostril, then bring this across to the right, up to a point, and back down and across, curving it up towards the top at the end. Top this with a short horizontal line.
Add a series of small dots below each of the nostrils…
And then add another wavy line emerging from the bottom, across to the right, and back up to a point to create a cheeky smile.
Now, add two small “n” shapes to this bottom line – hippos have plenty of teeth!
Add two lines – one emerging from the right tooth, and one in between the teeth – to create a tongue.
Add another, parallel line below the chin and teeth…
And then add a small, slanted mark above each of the eyes.
Bring a line up from the top of the nose, and curve this across to the right.
Now, add two small “horseshoe” shapes, with smaller horseshoes inside, to create ears.
Bring a line down from the right ear to connect to the right side of the jaw…
And then draw a curved line from the center of the right ear, moving across to the right, and curving down.
Add a curved line down from the center of the jaw, and then add a tall “u” shape below this for a leg. Add a small “m” shape to the bottom to create toes.
Add another leg to the right of the first…
Connect these two front legs together with a curved line, and then extend the curved line across to the right.
Add another leg to the back…
And then add another line just above the bottom line to create the belly.
Now, bring two lines across from the right, ending with a small “flame” shape to create a tail.
Use the black pen to add color to the nostrils…
Use a pink pen to add color to the inside of the ears and the tongue…
And then use a gray pen for the tummy.
Now, use a light cyan pen for the rest of the body…
And then use a red pen for the inside of the mouth.
Grab your black pen, and add colors to the end of the tail.
Then, use a blue pen for the bottom of the face…
And the same shade along the bottom of the body, and the legs.
And voila! A super cute hippo, just waiting for adventure. Why not take a little time to learn more about these wonderful creatures – there is plenty to learn!
