Of all the fantasy creatures that have emerged through television, literature and mythology, mermaids and unicorns hold a unique fascination for many of us. But a unicorn mermaid? Let’s draw one together to see how it turns out!

Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Begin your drawing by taking a black pen, and drawing two small points, one inside the other, to the left of the center of your page – this will be the ear of your creature.
2.

From the bottom right, bring a curved line across and down towards the bottom right-hand corner of the page, before curling this across and back up.
3.

Add another short line to the left of this…
4.

And then add a small dot inside the main section of the nose.
5.

Now, bring an angled line down towards the bottom right.
6.

Return to the right of the ear, and bring a curved line across and down, flicking up to a point, and then bringing it back in to create the forelock of your unicorn.
7.

Add two parallel, diagonal lines heading up towards the top right-hand corner of the page, and meeting in a point. Add a series of short, diagonal marks across this to create a horn for your unicorn.
8.

Use the black pen to add a circle below this for an eye…
9.

And then bring another two curved lines down and across to a point, this time from the left ear.
10.

Add another, longer section of mane behind this…
11.

And then a third curving round behind this one.
12.

Now, add another strand of mane behind those you have created so far. This time, flick the mane out to the left slightly.
13.

Now, add two lines, almost in an upwards arrow shape, to the line at the front of your unicorn to create a front leg. At the end of this, add a small curved shape to create a hoof.
14.

Now, add another front leg with two curved lines, once again ending in a hoof.
15.

Now, bring a curved line down from the back of the creature, and another parallel line from the front. Curve these around and up to meet in a point at the top. This is the mermaid tail!
16.

Add a series of bumpy lines all across the width of the tail for scales…
17.

And then add two “teardrop” shapes to the end for the fins.
18.

Add a series of slightly curved lines all up the length of each fin…
19.

And then add small circles all around the head of the unicorn.
20.

Now, grab a cyan pencil, and use this to add color to the tail and the fins.
21.

Use a pink pen to add a spot of color to the cheeks, and to fill in the inner two sections of mane.
22.

Then, grab a darker pink or purple pen, and color the rest of the mane, as well as one of the bubbles at the top.
23.

Grab an orange pencil, and use this to fill in alternating stripes on the horn.
24.

Now, use a yellow pencil to add color to the hooves…
25.

And use a brown pen to add a section to the end of the nose.
26.

Take a light orange pencil, and shade the back leg lightly.
And there we have it – one of the most curious creatures that you ever saw! Now, the rest is up to your imagination – starting with what you call this amazing new being!
