Grasshoppers are one insect that is all too often overlooked – but these are truly fascinating creatures with a lot to offer! Why not take your first steps to learn more about them by drawing your own and labeling the parts? We have everything you need to get started.

Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Use a black pen to draw a triangle-like shape, with wavy lines, on the left of your page.
2.

Add another curved shape to the left of this one…
3.

And then add a small almond shape to the bottom of this, adding a small curve in the center.
4.

Add an oval shape to the top curve, and add a smaller circle inside the first one.
5.

Switch to a thicker black pen, and bring across two curved, parallel lines to the left, growing wider as they reach the top.
6.

Switch back to your original pen, and draw two long, thin curved shapes emerging from the bottom.
7.

Follow this with another collection of these shapes behind, taking one across, then one down at an angle, and a third, with a bumpy bottom, angled towards the bottom left-hand corner of the page.
8.

Now, add a long, thin curved shape, angled at 45 degrees, to the right of this.
9.

Bring another long, thin “log” shape down from the end of this…
10.

And add three more small segments to the right.
11.

Connect this to the front section with two parallel lines.
12.

Add another long, thin segment to the space below this, and then add a small almond shape, a half-circle shape, and a curved line to join the front to the back.
13.

Now, add two parallel lines to the space between the lines at the back…
14.

And add a series of square “u” shapes, all connected to each other, inside the two parallel lines.
15.

Bring a line across above this section, and add a long, thin loop to the back.
16.

Next, add two “points” below this, in a fork shape, and bring a curved line across to meet the back leg.
17.

Now, add another set of shapes to the back to create the second back leg.
18.

Use a brown pen for the top section of the back, and the outside of the eyes.
19.

Then, use a dark green pen to shade the front and legs of the grasshopper.
20.

Add color to the rest of the body with a light green pen.
21.

Now, grab a black fineliner pen and a ruler, and draw a series of careful, straight lines pointing to the relevant areas of the body.
22.

Use the black fineliner to label the parts. From the bottom left corner up: “Legs”, “Head”, “Antenna”, and then across from left to right: “Eyes”, “Femur”, “Tibia”, “Wings”, “Ovipositor”, and the bottom right to left – “Abdomen”, and “Thorax”.
And there we have it – your first step towards learning more about the wonderful grasshopper – but there is plenty more to learn, so why not take some time to do a little research?
