Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Grab a ruler and a gray pencil, and add a long, vertical line from the bottom of your page, almost right to the top.
2.

Then, add a horizontal line across the top of your page.
3.

Add another horizontal line just above the bottom, and connect the two together with a vertical line on either side, creating a large rectangle with a line through the center.
4.

Next, add another rectangle, this time moving horizontally, across the bottom of your page.
5.

In this lower rectangle, create a cross shape by adding a horizontal line to the center.
6.

Draw a curved line in each of the top sections.
7.

Then, take an eraser and remove the sharp corners in the top section.
8.

Next, add a curved line to the bottom, spanning the bottom segments of the lower rectangle.
9.

Continue the bottom curve across the center, creating a large, wide “horseshoe” shape at the bottom.
10.

Connect the two sides of the “horseshoe” at the bottom with a curved line.
11.

Add two oval shapes to the top section, one on either side of the line, for eyes. Top these with angled lines above for eyebrows.
12.

Next, add two half-circle shapes to the top of the curved horizontal line…
13.

And then add two small ovals inside these for the nostrils.
14.

Time for some ears! Add two “horseshoe” shapes to the curved line at the very top, and follow these with smaller shapes inside the first.
15.

Next, add two ovals below the nostrils…
16.

And a wide, curved line just below the straight horizontal line.
17.

Add two straight, diagonal lines to the bottom curve, heading to the bottom corners of the page.
18.

Now, grab a black pen, and carefully go over the outline of your hippo’s face.
19.

Grab an eraser, and use this to remove any remaining pencil marks…
20.

And then use a light pink pen to shade the cheek spots.
21.

Use a light gray pen to shade the bottom of the face and the nose…
22.

And then use a dark gray pen for the top of the face, and the section at the bottom.
23.

Grab a black pen to fill in the eyes.
And in just a few short, simple steps, you have started your appreciation of the wonderful hippos. Why not do your own research to learn more – these are amazingly rewarding creatures.
