The humble hippo is all too often overlooked in favor of more “beautiful” animals – but we are here to change that perception and quash the stereotype in just a few short steps – let’s get started!
Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
Start by using a black fineliner pen to create a “ring” in the left side of your page.
Add two, smaller circles to the left of the central one…
And then add another circle to the outside, before drawing a curved line across the bottom.
Now, add another curved line to the top, and add a small “crescent moon” shape beneath this. Do you see your hippo’s eye starting to take shape?
Add a curved line to the left of the top one, and then a smaller curved shape just below the top of this.
Add a small teardrop shape beneath this curve for a nostril…
And then another curved line to the left, with a small “bump” at the top.
Add another nostril just below the bump.
Now, take the outline left line, and curve this across to the right for the top of the mouth. Add a small vertical mark to the end.
Now add two small rectangles to the left of this line for your hippos teeth.
Now, add another curved line from the vertical mark, heading down and across to the left.
Add another row of teeth to the top of this…
And then bring a line down from the left, before taking this across to the right, up across the jaw, and then ending in a wide bump, curving back up to just below the eye.
Join the bottom left tooth to the top of the mouth with a curved line, and then add another curve to the right of this. Draw a horizontal curved line to the right of this to create the detail for the tongue.
Now, return to the line on the right, and add a reversed “C” shape to create an ear. Connect this to the bump above the eye.
Add a small “teardrop” shape inside this for the inner ear…
And then add another ear just to the left of the eye, connected to the head with a short curve.
Continue the line from above the eye to over the right ear…
And then add another curved line up to the top right corner, and then back down towards the bottom of the page.
Now, draw another curve from below the jaw, across to the right. Add a short, diagonal line below this.
Bring a curved line down from the bottom of this, and flick the line towards the right, angled slightly downwards, at the bottom. We are going to turn this into the leg of your hippo.
Bring a line up from the end of this to create one leg, and then repeat this shape behind for the back leg.
Add a curve to the top, and then bring the line across to the right for the tummy, curving it back up at the end.
Add another leg to the back of the animal…
And then the fourth leg just in front of this.
Now, add a series of half circles all across the bottom of each leg, creating toes for your hippo.
Add a pointed tail to the back…
And then bring a wavy line across, just above the line of the tummy.
Next, use a pink pen to add color to the inside of the mouth…
And a brown pen for the spaces around the edges of this.
Take a light gray pen, and shade the tummy and chest of the hippo. Then, use a very light pink pencil to shade the inner ear.
Take a darker gray pen, and fill in the main body of the hippo…
Before using a blue pen to add color to the eye.
Use a black pen to add color to the eyebrow and eye, and then fill in the nostrils as well.
And in just a few short steps, you have your very own super cute hippo to enjoy! Why not spend a little time finding out more about these fascinating creatures? There is plenty to learn!
