Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Start with a black fineliner pen, and draw a jagged “cloud” shape in the right half of your page. Add a small circle to the center of this.
2.

Draw a series of lines connecting this central circle to the outside edges of the shape.
3.

Now, add another “quarter circle” shape to the top of this, and add a series of long, thin lines to create a segmented effect.
4.

Add another spiky shape to the left of these, with another circle in the center.
5.

Fill this with lines emanating from the center to the outside edges…
6.

And then add a jagged line to the left, and another forked line to the right, connecting this shape to the two others. Draw a jagged line heading left from the bottom shape, and then take the line straight down towards the bottom of the page.
7.

Add another jagged shape and circle to the top…
8.

And fill in the lines as before.
9.

Now, bring two jagged, diagonal lines down from the bottom left of this, and then join the two lines together.
10.

Add a smaller shape to the left…
11.

And fill this in once again with the straighter lines.
12.

Add another “quarter circle” section to the top of this, just as you did with the first shape.
13.

Add another shape, complete with details, to the left of this group…
14.

And then add another smaller section just above, connecting the two together with short, jagged lines.
15.

Now, add three outlines of the smaller shapes, clumped together in a group, to the left of the section you just drew.
16.

Fill these in with the lines…
17.

And add another large shape below them.
18.

Add the lines to the shape you have just created…
19.

And then repeat this shape with an example to the left.
20.

Now, add smaller “sections” to the top and side of this main shape.
21.

From the bottom, use a jagged, diagonal line to connect this section to a horizontal line at the bottom. From this, use a vertical jagged line to connect the top section, and repeat this until all of your shapes are connected.
22.

Now, add another shape to the bottom of the line…
23.

And then bring two jagged, horizontal lines across to create another shape.
24.

Now, add a line parallel to the vertical one at the bottom, and join these with a horizontal line to form the trunk of the tree.
25.

Grab a green pen for the leaves on your tree…
26.

And an orange pen for the spaces between the jagged lines.
27.

Finally, use a brown pen to shade the trunk of the tree and complete your drawing.
And voila – a stunning Joshua tree has emerged! Why not spend a little time researching and learning more about these trees, or the National Park that they give their name to – there is so much to learn and explore!
