Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Fold your page in half, then fold your page back again. Start by taking a gray pencil, and draw the top of a wing with a curved line taken down into a “bump”, and then a second, shorter “bump” below this, taking the line across to the left. Add another curved line below this, taking it down and across, up towards the top left-hand corner of the page.
2.

Add a series of small shapes and patterns inside the wings – make a combination of long and short shapes.
3.

Next, reflect this on the other side to create the outline of the butterfly. To speed up the completion of this step, you could fold your page in half again, and use the bottom of your pencil to give pressure to the paper. This will create the outline for you on the paper. Then fold your page back again and follow the outline to duplicate the existing half of the butterfly. Watch the video above if you would like to see this step in action.
4.

Go over all of your lines so far with a black marker pen, and then add a long, thin line to the center, topping this with a small circle.
5.

Use the black pen to add a series of small squares to the bottom right wing…
6.

And shade in the space around these with the black pen.
7.

Repeat this on the left, with a series of small shapes in the bottom left.
8.

Shade the spaces around the shapes all across the bottom half of the butterfly.
9.

Now, add long, thin shapes to the top wing…
10.

And then repeat this on the left, shading the space around it.
11.

Use the black pen to fill in the space around the patterns.
12.

Use the black pen and a ruler to add two straight lines to the top of the head, pointing towards the top corners of the page. Add a small circle to each of these.
13.

Use a purple pen to shade the space in the center…
14.

And then a lighter pink pen to the patterned spots at the edges.
15.

Grab the purple pen, and add color to the space around the wings to create an outline.
And there we have it – your very own stunning purple butterfly. All it needs is a name!
