Step-By-Step Instructions

1.

How to draw a water fountain step 1

Begin in the center of your page, around an inch and a half (3.8 cm) from the top of the paper. Here, draw a small semicircle using your black pen, almost like a very wide “U” shape, and add lines to the top and sides so that it is a solid shape.

2.

Move to the ends of your semicircle, and draw two lines downwards from each end, making sure they are parallel. At the bottom, join these lines together with a horizontal line, and add a “D” shape to the right hand side, and a reverse “D” to the left. Fill these in so that they are solid.

3.

Return to the top of the two parallel lines you just created, and draw a line out horizontally to either side. Make sure that this curves downwards as it moves across the page, with a 45 degree turn downwards at either end.

4.

Move to just underneath this line, and draw a parallel line directly beneath, carrying the lines round in a wide, flat oval shape, and joining them at the bottom in a curve.

5.

Return to the top lines, and continue the curve of these to follow the oval you just made. You will now have a “ring” shape, comprised of two parallel lines.

6.

Turn to the bottom of the “ring”, and draw a smooth “bowl” shape underneath, with the starting lines slightly inside the upper ring, and leaving the ends separated. From the bottom of this, draw two parallel, wavy lines heading downwards.

7.

Draw another “flat oval” shape at the bottom of the wavy tunnel you have just created, making sure that the length is ever so slightly longer than the oval at the top.

8.

Add another, parallel line around this oval, so that you create another “ring” shape at the bottom.

9.

From the bottom of this lower ring, add another “bowl” shape, once again keeping the starting lines just shorter than the ring.

10.

Move to the bottom of the bowl, and place your pen so it is roughly in line with the wavy tunnel you created earlier. Draw a line downwards on each side, in line with the lines above, and add small bumps as you go. After two “bumps”, bring the line out and across on either side, curving downwards. Connect these two lines at the bottom with a slightly curved line.

11.

Now for some detail! Take the “bumps” you have just drawn, and connect both sides with a horizontal line to add details and features to your fountain. Next, draw a line parallel with the bottom line, just a short way above, and make sure that this curves round and up. Finally, add some “stretched teardrop” shapes to this central panel you have creates, making sure that they follow the curves of the shape.

12.

Now, head back to the bottom “bowl”, and add a series of half circles, with the bottoms following the bottom curve of the bowl, all across the shape.

13.

Move upwards to the wavy tunnel just above, and add two horizontal lines at the top and the bottom of the wave.

Moving up once again to the top bowl, repeat your earlier actions by adding a series of half circles as decoration. These should be slightly smaller than the ones in the bottom bowl.

Next, return to the half circles you drew in the bottom bowl, and thicken the right hand line on each shape. You should end up with a series of half circles, the left hand line normal, and the right hand side slightly thicker.

16.

Now for some color! Add a bright, vibrant blue to the top and bottom bowls, leaving the rims empty for now.

17.

What is a fountain without water? Add a spray from the top square, and allow the water to cascade down into the lower bowl – you can be really creative here!

18.

Head back to the bottom bowl, and add some blades of grass around the ground.

Add detail and decoration with trailing leaves and fronds – let your imagination take over.

Finish off by adding shading to the side and details of the fountain (using a pencil), to really bring the structure to life.
