Add a few more circles to the bottom of this shape, until you have a chain of six. Then, add four long “sausage” shapes emerging from the bottom of this shape, and flaring out.

Add a curved line to each side; this should flow out and down, coming back in at the bottom on the left hand side. On the right hand side, it should come out, down and in, before flaring back out again.

Return to the left hand side, and bring the line in and down, creating a “funnel” at the bottom of the shape.

Now for those iconic elephant ears! On the right hand side of your elephant’s face, bring a line out to a point, and back in to create a large, flappy triangle shape.

Now your elephant unicorn needs a body – draw two lines flaring out slightly from either side of the body. Join the two lines at the bottom with a curve.

Now for some decoration! Add some wavy stripes all across the body of your unicorn – make sure you use double lines so that you get nice thick stripes.

Finally, grab a black liner, and use this to add an outline to each of the details of your unicorn elephant, to highlight the delicate toes, outline the stripes, the tusks and the face. Then, add a few eyelashes to both of the eyes, and enjoy your adorable unicorn elephant!

And there we have it; on just a few short steps, you have learned to create an adorable unicorn elephant – and had the chance to use plenty of colors along the way.

From fairytales to perfect princess endings, the unicorn is one of the most popular mythical creatures created, and it is easy to see why!

The idea of unicorns is one which reaches right back into history; the very first drawing was located in the Lascaux Caves, and dates back to 15,000 BCE.

In Western literature the first ever record of unicorns was made by Ctesias in around 400 BCE. According to his records, the creature he saw had a white body and purple head, with blue eyes, and an incredible multicolored horn, with white, black and red colors.

As well as being considered beautiful – with the exception of Marco Polo’s confusion of rhinos and unicorns – they have also changed the fate of civilizations across history. According to legend, Genghis Khan decided against conquering India after encountering a unicorn, which bowed down before him. Khan viewed the meeting with the unicorn as a sign from his dead father, and ordered his army to turn back – pretty impressive work from the unicorn!

Heraldry and art have long celebrated the unicorn, to the point that it has become the national animal of Scotland thanks to its association with King James III of Scotland in the 1400s.

In addition to its royal connections, the animal can also be seen on the ancient seals of Assyria and Babylonia, and its mystery and beauty continue to accrue new fans each and every day.
