1.

How to draw an abstract rose step 1

Start with a gray pencil, and draw a half-moon shape roughly in the center of your page.

Next, draw another shape opposite this one – almost like a mirror reflection. Make this second half-moon a little longer than the first.

3.

Repeat the shape a third time, this time to the right hand side of the existing shapes, and slightly above these. This should be longer than the previous examples.

4.

Replicate the shape again this time just above the first shape you created.

5.

Repeat the shape beneath the one you have just drawn, rotating this one around 90 degrees.

6.

Add another, slightly larger example just beneath the one which is currently at the bottom…

And add another example to the right of the others, once again rotated 90 degrees to the right.

Beneath this latest shape, add another, large and long half-moon shape, curving slightly to encompass the smaller shapes you have already made.

9.

Add another large half-moon to the top of the collection.

And another larger one just below this – rotate this at a 90 degree angle to the left.

11.

Recreate the shape at the bottom, in between the two surrounding half-moon shapes.

Next, add a large, leaf shape to the bottom of your drawing – the tip of this should be angled downward. Leave the base empty and unconnected for the moment.

13.

Repeat the leaf shape off to the right hand side of the main rose shape…

14.

And follow this up with another, longer leaf reaching out on the left hand side.

15.

Replicate the shape of the leaf in the top left corner of the main rose.

16.

Now, add a line to the outside right hand edge of the bottom leaf, parallel to the first line, and connect the bottom of the lines together with a gentle curve.

17.

Copy this on the leaf to the left hand side…

And to the leaf on the opposite side of this, at the top of the drawing.

19.

Now, add the same line to the edge of the other leaf, and connect the bottom of these lines with the same curve.

20.

Use a red pen to fill in the petals in the center of the leaves – these are the main flower of your rose.

21.

Use a green pen to fill in the body of the leaves; leave the outside lines as simple pencil lines for the moment.

Now, go over these lines with a light green pen to add a little life and vibrancy to your rose.

Finish your flower by adding a short vertical line to the center of each leaf, emerging from the bottom curve, which connects the two halves.

And voila, you are the proud owner of a stunning rose design!

What is in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet… with this single, simple line – probably one of the most famous lines in all of literature – William Shakespeare secured the reputation of the humble rose as one of the most romantic flowers in the plant kingdom – and this is a reputation which has not gone away!

Roses have a rich and lengthy history, stretching back over 35 million years thanks to the discovery by archaeologists of rose fossils. The oldest living rose is currently 1000 years old, and grows on a wall in the Hildesheim Cathedral, located in Germany – as they say, love never dies!

As well as being useful to help you declare your undying love to your sweetheart, roses also have a number of other surprising uses – including their fragrance being used in perfumes around the world (it takes two thousand roses to produce just one gram of rose oil, so this is no simple process!) to being edible in the right circumstances.

Soaking the petals in water allows you to create a substance to be added to jams and jellies, and you can also find roses in many Chinese and Indian dishes to ad extra flavoring.

Rose hips are another popular delicacy – they are packed with Vitamin C, and are popular in cocktails, teas and as a super refreshing pick-me-up. There is more to a humble rose than simply sitting back ad looking pretty!

The most expensive rose in history sold for $15.8 million in 2006 – but you don’t have to spend anywhere near that much to create your own stunning sample – read on to learn how with our drawing tutorial above!
