Take a black pen, and draw a curved line on the right hand side of the page, beginning around an inch (2.5 cm) from the top, and ending around half an inch (1.3 cm) from the bottom.

2.

From the top of the line, draw another line extending out horizontally to the left. Make this around two inches (5 cm) long. Repeat this at the bottom of the first line, this time making the horizontal line a little shorter. You will be left with a shape that resembles a right hand square bracket.

3.

Return to the original line you drew, and add a semicircle shape out towards the right, around halfway up this line.

Next, add gentle hatching just above this semicircle shape, up to the top line.

5.

Return to the semicircle, and add a smooth vertical line around halfway across the shape.

6.

Now draw another line to the right of this – you will end up with a “strip” inside the semicircle. Add hatching to this strip, and then extend the hatching out and down in a slight diagonal line, ending when you are level with the bottom line.

7.

Add a large oval shape around the semicircle shape, enclosing the hatching and extending just beyond the edges of the “closed bracket”.

Now, draw a single, straight line just left of the central line. This should angle down around 45 degrees, and be around an inch long. Make sure there is a gap between the top edge of your “bracket” and the new line.

9.

Connect the two lines with a semicircle line, creating almost a “dip” in the top line of your drawing – this will soon form the top of your plane!

Just below this “dip”, add another slightly curved line, around an inch and a half (3.8 cm) in length – this will be the top of your first wing.

11.

Fill in the rest of the wing shape by drawing two curved lines from the ends of this line, joining them together at the bottom in a point. You will now have a clear wing shape extending from the bottom of your plane.

12.

Now for the shape of your plane – begin at the left hand end of the top line, and add another “dip” shape, just as you did earlier. This time, angle the “dip” down around 45 degrees. At the top of the dip, you need to add a large “C” shape to create the tail of the aircraft. Add another line heading out to the left of the wing, making this around one inch in length. Once again, you will have a gap – this time, in the bottom line of the plane.

13.

Add another, slightly smaller wing shape to the gap you left to complete the outline of your airplane!

14.

Next, add another smaller wing shape to the “dip” you created at the back – there should now be two of these shapes at the left hand end, and a larger one to the bottom of the middle of the plane.

15.

Every plane needs a pilot, so start off by drawing a “teardrop” shape just above the dip at the top of your plane. The tip of the teardrop should be angled to the left and facing downwards, at around 45 degrees. Add a curved line to the center of the teardrop, and follow this with parallel curved lines in one half – this is the hair.

Give your pilot some goggles, with the strap moving across the hair of the pilot…

And fill in a crescent shape just below the head, and another semicircle just below this for the body. Don’t forget to add the tail of the scarf!

Now we need another wing; add this by drawing another large, wing shape behind your pilot, this time stretching upwards.

Add a curved triangle just inside the right hand edge of the wing, with the sharp tip level with the top of the pilot’s head.

Time for the banner! On the back of the plane draw a large triangle, with a ling, thin “strip” at the end. Next join the top and bottom of this strip to the left hand edge of the page with two curved lines, one at the top and one at the bottom.

21.

Switch to a red pencil, and color in the main body of your plane, along with the wings, and the edges of the triangle holding the banner at the back. Leave a small strip along the edges of the wings and the top of the plane.

22.

Return to your black pen, and fill in the body of the pilot.

And then switch to a pink pencil and fill in the edges of the plane with the light shade.

Grab a cyan pencil, and fill in the triangle in front of the pilot…

Before switching to a pale orange pencil to carefully and lightly shade in the face of the pilot.

Finally, grab a gray pencil, and add some gentle shading to the front of the plane, and the propeller.

And just like that, you have your very own airplane with a banner on the back! Why not add your own little touch by adding a message or color to the banner – what special occasion will you celebrate?
