Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

To begin your drawing, add a curved line to the left of your page with a black fineliner pen. At the bottom of this, leave a small gap, and then add a shorter curved line.
2.

Bring two parallel lines down, one on either side of this short curve, and join these with a “fork” shape at the bottom.
3.

Now, add a curved point, heading off to the left, just at the top of the shorter curve. Add another curved line to the bottom of this for the tusks of the elephant.
4.

Bring a curved line across to the right, and take this up and across to the right.
5.

Next, add a series of small marks all down the length of the trunk…
6.

And add a small black circle to the top, creating an eye. Shade the bottom of this, and then add curves to the top and bottom of the eye, and a wavy line above.
7.

Return to the curved line at the top, and add a bump to the end of this. Take this down at an angle, and then across in a series of square bumps, towards the bottom left-hand corner. At the end, add a curved line to create the ear of your elephant, and add small marks to the right.
8.

Add a curved line just above the eye, and then another wavy line behind this.
9.

Now, bring a line across from the top of the ear, and take this across the page and then curve it down gently.
10.

Return to the ear at the front, and bring a curved line down from the bottom of this, adding a wavy line. Take this across to the right, and then up towards the top right-hand corner of the page.
11.

Add two small curves to the bottom of the feet for toes.
12.

Add small lines above this for the knee, and then add small sections of hatching behind the ear.
13.

Bring a curved line across for the belly…
14.

And then add a second leg behind the first, with a little hatching towards the back.
15.

Add the back leg, with more hatching for decoration and wrinkles.
16.

Now, add the outline of a foot at the back…
17.

And gradually add sections of hatching to this to create a back leg.
18.

Use the black pen to draw a curved, heart shape above the bottom of this back foot.
19.

Connect this to the top of the back for the tail…
20.

And then bring a wavy line across to the right.
21.

Add another line below this, and then add a point with a wavy line to the right, and a curved, bumpy line heading up. Curve this up and across to form the outline of the baby elephant’s face, and then add a small triangle eye, with a thicker left line, and a small brow above it.
22.

Bring a line down from beneath the face, take this across to the left, and then across and up to form a front leg for the baby. Add tiny toes to the bottom.
23.

Add another leg behind the first, this time pointing towards the bottom right corner…
24.

And then bring a curved line across from the top of the ear. Curve this down at the end, and add a pointed tail to the back.
25.

Add another leg at the back, just below the tail…
26.

Then add another leg just in front, and connect these with a curved line for the tummy.
27.

Now, add tiny sections of hatching to the legs.
28.

Add larger sections of fine hatching to the belly of the Mama elephant…
29.

And then use a gray pencil to gently shade the back of the adult elephant and the back of the baby, along with the backs of the legs, the bottom of the trunk, and a few details on the face.
30.

Use the gray pencil to shade the remaining areas of the body on both animals, then blur these areas with your finger or with a tissue to create a nice texture.
31.

Use a yellow pen to add color to the tusks at the front of the adult elephant.
Now – isn’t that a scene that truly warms the heart? There are plenty of amazing things to learn about elephants, so why not take some time to do a little research?
