Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Begin with a black pen. Draw a curved line pointing towards the top right and bottom left corners, and then add a wavy line to the bottom.
2.

Now, add a series of curved lines emerging from the bottom of this, up towards the edges.
3.

Add two more curved lines in the center, and then add a few short, horizontal lines towards the left.
4.

Now, draw a small oval shape to the left of this…
5.

And add a small circle to the bottom, with another small circle to the left. Connect these with two horizontal, parallel lines.
6.

Add another long, thin section heading down from the second circle, and add three small circles below this, with a triangle shape at the bottom.
7.

Draw a larger circle to the top right of this…
8.

And then ad long, thin ring below the horizontal section.
9.

Bring a curved line up from the top of this, taking this to the right of the circle.
10.

Now, add a smaller oval shape to the left of the circle. Bring a wavy line across from this, and add small marks.
11.

Enclose the large circle in a curved, triangle-like shape…
12.

Add a teardrop shape to the right…
13.

And then attach this to a large, slightly curved triangle.
14.

Add another teardrop shape to the bottom of the triangle, this time pointing in the opposite direction.
15.

Add a small curve to the bottom of this, and then a long, thin, pointed shape to the right, pointing up into the corner.
16.

Add a small circle to the end, and then another long, thin pointed shape heading down towards the bottom right corner. Follow this with three small segments.
17.

Now, add a long, thin shape, with circles at either end, to the bottom of the top section.
18.

Bring down another vertical section, a shorter angled section, and then three small segments.
19.

Next, add a triangle to the top of this, with a small rectangle to the left. Add another small, angled rectangle shape just below this.
20.

Now, add a large, pointed teardrop shape to the very back of the insect, behind the segmented legs.
21.

Connect the wide ring at the front to the bottom of the leg with curved lines.
22.

Now, add a thicker black line to the top left of this front leg.
23.

Use a red pen to shade the circle of the eye and the inside of the ring.
24.

Grab a green pen, and use this to shade the rest of the insect’s body, leaving the wings white.
25.

Grab a black fineliner pen and a ruler, and add a series of straight lines all around the body of the insect, and three horizontal lines at the top, with small marks at either end.
26.

Use the black fineliner pen to add the right labels to the right sections, just as you see above. Starting from the bottom left corner: Fore leg, Prothorax, Antenna, Arista, Compound eye, Head, Prescutum, Wing, Metathorax, Abdominal segment, Femur, Tibia, Hind leg, Tarsus, Middle leg, Balancer, Thoracic stigma, Mouth parts. Finally, label the main parts on the top of your drawing: Head, Thorax, Abdomen.
This is just the first step in learning more about these amazing insects – there are still plenty of fascinating facts to uncover!
