Our Earth is the most precious thing that any of us are part of – and we all have a responsibility for keeping her safe and protecting her in any way we can. To help demonstrate this, we have created a symbol of this promise – the hands holding the Earth safe and protected. Ready to create your own? Then let’s take a closer look!

Step-By-Step Images and Instructions
1.

Grab a pencil and a drawing compass, and draw a large circle in the center of your page.
2.

Use a ruler to draw a straight, vertical line at the bottom of this, and then add a line to the bottom on either side.
3.

From the top of these side lines, add a curved line, and take the lines across and up, curving them around the central circle.
4.

Add a curved line to the right section, and take this up to a loop, before bringing the line back down, across and down to the bottom of the page.
5.

Repeat this shape on the left side…
6.

And then add a curved shape to the top of each “loop” – do you see the thumbs and hands starting to take shape?
7.

Now, bring a diagonal line up from the bottom of the hands on each side, heading up towards the corners. Take the lines up at a steeper angle, then up and in slightly.
8.

Return to the bottom of these lines, and take lines down to the bottom of the page.
9.

Now, add a loop to the top of each side for the sides of the hands…
10.

And bring a line down in the center of each hand.
11.

Add another, taller finger to the side of each of the ones you have already drawn.
12.

Now, add another finger inside each side, this time slightly smaller.
13.

Bring a fourth finger up on the right hand…
14.

Bring another line up inside the curve on the left hand…
15.

And use this to create the fourth finger on this side.
16.

Make sure that the lines of the fingers are smooth and connected.
17.

Add a line from below each of the thumbnails, taking this down to the bottom of the thumb.
18.

Now, add a continent to the bottom of the circle with a jagged line.
19.

Add the bottom of another continent above this.
20.

Continue to fill in the lines and shapes…
21.

Continue to add to the details of the continents…
22.

And add another shape to the bottom right.
23.

Continue to add detail here…
24.

And complete the continents to create the shape of the Earth.
25.

Use a black fineliner to go over all the outlines.
26.

Use an eraser to remove all the pencil marks, but leave faint guidelines.
27.

Grab an orange pen to shade the palms and the inside of the hands…
28.

And then use a darker orange for the rest of the hands.
29.

Use a blue pen to color the oceans…
30.

And a green pen for the land.
31.

Use a light brown pen to color the nails.
And there we have it – you have the world in your hands, so make sure that you do your part to protect and keep her safe.
